Commentary Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724), who illustrated this episode in a very accurate and detailed way.
Johannot has preferred a wider composition with a larger number of figures, so they are not as detailed as Coyple's but the main characters can be recognized: don Quixote observing the performance (left), Wealth's retinue (foreground), Love's retinue fleeing away from Wealth (right foreground) and Love firing his arrow at the castle (right background).
Excellent vignette.
Notes 1 - Same illustration and wooden block first used for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37.
