Commentary | Don Quixote in bed dying; around him, the priest, the barber, Sansón Carrasco, Sancho, the niece and the housekeeper.
The arms left aside (end of don Quixote's madness); a crucifix over his bed (Christian death). Traditional composition. The housekeeper's gesture expressing sorrow is quite remarkable. Notice the use of reserves in white to highlight don Quixote's figure. It can be compared with Johannot's illustration (Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37). Excellent drawing. |
