Commentary | Reference to the tale of the Knight of the Lake as told by don Quixote in defense of chivalry novels.
First of three illustrations about this tale; the knight arrive at a lake full of all kind of beasts and serpents. Illustration in keeping with Romanticism and Doré's liking for legendary, fantastic and bloody scenes. Doré's imagination is prodigious (giant insects, fantastic birds, hybrid creatures...) Drawing and engraving are excellent. |
