Commentary | Agramant's camp.
Well-known scene, but Apeles Mestres has resolved it with originality using a composition with two levels. In the lower part, the fight among Sancho and the barber (both seizing the packsaddle), don Quixote, don Fernando and an officer of the Holy Brotherhood, and don Luis with his servants. In the upper part (a gallery of the inn), Dorotea, Luscinda, Zoraida, doña Clara, the innkeeper's wife, her daughter and Maritornes, all with theatrical gestures of anxiety, grief, worry... Detailed figures and setting, resolved with picturesque realism; good coloring too. |
