Commentary This Cervantes' portrait (147 x 118; cut and paste on the page), not only physiognomic but psychological too, was designed and etched by Maura in 1879 (as it is said in the signature on the left); however, what appears in this edition is a reproduction by helioengraving (monogram on the right "H S M"). The portrait is excellent.
The ornamental frame (267 x 196), made with a variety of chromolithography known as oleography (to imitate an oil painting), includes a facsimile of Cervantes' signature, captives, several puti with symbols of Fame, War (Mars), Sea (Neptune) and the inscription "LEPANTO" and a baluster shaped column with Apollo.
Notes Bartolomé Maura y Montaner o Muntaner (Palma de Mallorca, 1844 – Madrid, 1926): Painter and engraver. Maura worked as an engraver for the Fábrica Nacional de la Moneda y Timbre. In 1877, he engraved Eduardo Rosales’ painting "El Testamento de Isabel La Católica". In 1892, Maura engraved a medal to commemorate the IV centenary of the America discovery; this medal was awarded by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Benezit VII, 275).

"... este retrato de Bartolomé Maura, tan nuevo y tan desconcertante, representa eso: el descubrimiento de la melancolía de Cervantes, de la insondable ruina de su propia vida. Es un Cervantes que mira con esos ojos de piedad, con que le estaban ahora contemplando a él por primera vez [...]. El de Bartolomé Maura es el último de los retratos cervantinos interesantes, debidos a la interpretación personal de algún artista español, en el siglo XIX" (GG64-66).
