Commentary | When don Quixote returns home taken by Pedro Alonso, the niece remembers how his uncle became mad reading chivalry books; "muchas veces le aconteció a mi señor tío estarse leyendo en estos desalmados libros de desventuras dos días con sus noches, al cabo de los cuales arrojaba el libro de las manos y ponía mano a la espada, y andaba a cuchilladas con las paredes" (5:1).
Don Quixote's image is quite theatrical (notice his gesture), but it is remarkable, especially his face. The setting, as usual in this edition, tries to be very accurate (notice the tile wainscot). |
Notes | 1 - It has been used a variety of chromolithography known as oleography to imitate an oil painting. |
