Commentary | Don Quixote, taking his shoes off, makes two dozen stitches in one of his stockings, what reminds him his poverty and the absence of Sancho.
Scene full of melancholy and sadness well-represented by the atmosphere and colors. The illustration is very influenced by impressionist painting, with very remarkable results. |
Notes | 1 - It has been used a variety of chromolithography known as oleography to imitate an oil painting.
2 - The illustration is not signed by the illustrator. 3 - "... Pellicer, por ejemplo, tomó minuciosas precauciones para hacer el retrato de Don Quijote "tal como debió él ser". Lee con atención a Cervantes, saca apuntes, se documenta, estudia la indumentaria, el mobiliario y todo "el ambiente" de la época quijotesca. Y luego, después de tanto trabajo, cuando se pone a pintar el melancólico lance de las medias escurridas, en casa de los Duques, le sale un Don Quijote con una cabeza perfectamente contemporánea suya, esto es, del pintor Pellicer, y nos representa al héroe sumido en sus tristes pensamientos, a solas, en una estancia que parece un rincón de un estudio de pintor ochocentista, émulo o discípulo de Mariano Fortuny" (GG273-274). |
