Commentary At the inn, don Quixote is knighted by the innkeeper, who appears raising a sword.
Also in the scene, accurate to Cervantes' text and in keeping with a well-known composition, the two party girls (doña Molinera and doña Tolosa) and a boy.
The figures try to be realistic and "Spanish"; notice innkeeper's "goyescas" clothes.
Don Quixote's figure results serious and gaunt (notice his face), but also comical (notice the feathers on his helmet).
Notes 1 - The title page refers to "Farbendruckbildern" (images printed in colors; chromotypes); Wald's original watercolors have been reproduced using different photography negatives. The result is quite similar to a chromolithograph.
2 - Signed by the technician/printer M. Seeger (Stuttgart).
3 - Placed as frontispiece.
