Commentary In the background, Sancho taking care of don Quixote, fallen on the ground half-dead after being beaten by a penitent; around them, other penitents, the priest, barber, officers of the Holy Brotherhood and others.
In the foreground, the penitent that has beaten don Quixote running away.
Very remarkable representation of this episode, with excellent sense of humor.
Accurate to Cervantes' text: "y así, creyendo que le había muerto, con priesa se alzó la túnica a la cinta, y dio a huir por la campaña como un gamo" (52:1).
The representation of the group in the background is almost an inverted copied after Doré (Paris: Hachette, 1863); the figure of the ecclesiastic/penitent running away is completely new.
Notes 1 - B/w illustrations are signed not only by the painter (AW), but also by the photographer/technician; however, his signature has not been identified; it is formed by the initials superimposed (A? C? T? P?) and the reference "ph." (photographer or photographed).
