Commentary | "He would often dispute with the curate of the parish".
Don Quixote and the priest talking about chivalry books; also in the scene the barber, shaving the priest. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period setting, clothes and furniture; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable expressions and gestures. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1898 in Sevilla and presented at the Exposition of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1898).
2 - "El proceso de la locura de Quijada constituye los dibujos restantes del capítulo. Primeramente, vemos la porfía ó competencia mantenida con el cura del lugar, y al parecer en su casa, mientras le hace la barba maese Nicolás. Quijada sentado, pero inquieto, porfía con gesto de no ceder; el cura, sentado enfrente, procura conllevarle, según se desprende de su ademán; y el barbero, que va á mudar el agua de la vacía, mira con cara de risa al peregrino disputador.
