Commentary | "That at night he would pore on until it was day,...".
At dawn, Alonso Quijano reading chivalry books at his room/library by the light of an oil lamp (he has been reading during the whole night). Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period setting, clothes and furniture; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow; don Quixote's expression is worth noting too. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1898 in Sevilla and presented at the Exposition of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1898).
2 - "... nos muestra al maniático en una de aquellas noches que se le pasaban leyendo de claro en claro; por su traje ligero y desordenado, se comprende que ha dejado el lecho, y puesto de codos en su mesa, á la luz de un velón de Lucena, devora febril un infolio; otros tiene al lado, varios sobre una silla, y así le encuentra el alba que por la ventana se descubre.
