Commentary | "... sending them some damsel through the air in a cloud...".
An enchanter carrying on a cloud a dwarf and a damsel with a vial of magic water to heal wounds; the cloud shapes imaginary creatures. Reference to the advice given by the innkeeper to don Quixote about the things that he must carry in his purses. Very original illustration; imaginative image in contrast with the predominant realistic/picturesque style of the whole edition. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1899 in Sevilla and presented at the National Exposition of Madrid (1899).
