Commentary | "... and he, seeing a man lie at his full length on the ground, came up to him,...".
Pedro Alonso, a neighbour of don Quixote's village, encounters the knight lying half-dead on the ground in the middle of the road. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and landscape; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1899 in Sevilla and presented at the National Exposition of Madrid (1899).
2 - "A la energía con que está tratado este capítulo sucede la delicadeza y el espíritu con que Aranda interpretó el siguiente. Le da comienzo con la presencia del labrador que se acerca al caído, le limpia el rostro y le conoce. Desembarázale luego de peto y espaldar, le sube á su jumento, lía las armas sobre Rocinante, toma á éste de la rienda y del cabestro del asno, y se encamina al lugar" (José Ramón Mélida: “Don José Jiménez Aranda y su "Quijote"", vol.
