Commentary | "... he tied them on Rozinante,".
Don Quixote mounted on Pedro Alonso's donkey while his neighbour ties his arms on Rocinante. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and landscape (with a remarkable impressionist style); realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1899 in Sevilla and presented at the National Exposition of Madrid (1899).
2 - "Dos de estas composiciones son, á nuestro modo de ver, de las mejores que hizo el autor. En una, el labrador, con su traje característico y su gorra de piel, lía las armas sobre el caballo; Don Quijote, triste y apabullado sobre el burro, para mayor irrisión del flamante caballero, con los cabellos en desorden, mira con expresión indefinible é indiferente cómo lían sus rotas armas. Aquella figura digna, mohina y desairada á la vez; aquel rostro que revela á un tiempo el extravío y el dolor físico, resumen de un modo elocuentísimo y acabado todo lo que en tal pasaje se lee al través de la página cervantina. Los generosos intentos caballerescos quedaron desbaratados y escarnecidos en su choque con la bárbara realidad: esta es la idea que flota en torno de esta admirable figura, tan sentida y tan verdadera.
