Commentary | "But the countrymann stayed at some distance till it was dark,...".
Don Quixote, mounted on Pedro Alonso's donkey, and his neighbour talking and waiting till it was dark to enter in their village. Beside them, Rocinante carrying don Quixote's arms, armour and broken lance. Remarkable composition with an excellent view of the village in the background. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, architectures and landscape; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1899 in Sevilla and presented at the National Exposition of Madrid (1899).
2 - "Sigue esta admirable psicología de Don Quijote: [...] vémosle en amigable plática con el labrador en un altozano á la vista del pueblo, pintoresco asunto del que hizo un cuadro el autor..." (José Ramón Mélida: “Don José Jiménez Aranda y su "Quijote"", vol. I TEXTO, p. XXXVIII). 3 - Jiménez Aranda also made a painting about this same subject. |
