Commentary | "They sallied forth from the village one night...".
Beginning of don Quixote's second sally; now accompanied by Sancho as his squire. Canonical image of don Quixote armed and mounted on Rocinnate followed by sancho on his donkey. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period setting, clothes and details; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow; notice the night sky with some stars. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1900 in Sevilla and presented at the Universal Exposition of Paris (1900).
2 - This is the last drawing (nº 137) painted using natural sceneries and real models. |
