Commentary | "On this accursed bed Don Quixote stretched himself, and the hostess and her daughter soon covered him with plasters...".
The innkeeper's wife and her daughter healing don Quixote's wounds; Maritornes lights the scene holding a lamp; and Sancho and the innkeeper (Juan Palomeque) observe them. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects; notice the light effects produced by the lamp. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
2 - "... dibujos llenos de gracia y de expresión. [...] Las sombras reales, pero gigantescas, que de los personajes proyecta el candil en la pared, en los pasajes de la cura que hacen las mujeres de los apaleados [...] prestan mayor interés á estos dibujos" (José Ramón Mélida: “Don José Jiménez Aranda y su "Quijote"", vol. I TEXTO, p. XLV). |
