Commentary | ".... if thon Knewest as I do what an honourable and illustrions lady Queen Madasima was,...".
In Sierra Morena, don Quixote and Sancho continue talking about Queen Madasima and don Quixote also decides to do penance as Beltenebros (Amadis) and Roland. In the upper half of the illustration, some scenes about this dialogue: Queen Madasima and master Elisabad; Beltenebros's penance in Peña Pobre; Angelica and Medoro; mad Roland dragging a pair of mares after him; Sancho before Dulcinea; and don Quixote's penance. Remarkable and original carefully-done narrative composition. Good variety of figures, gestures and expressions. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project. |
