Commentary Ornamental heapiece with different elements from the first chapter: Alonso Quijano reading a chivalry book at his house and followed by a pair of greyhounds; also the housekeeper, his niece and the groom (that served him both in field and at home).
Framing this main scene, don Quixote's arms (helmet, lance, shield...), Alonso Quijano's food (a pigeon, lentils...) and the imperial coat of arms of Spain (with two-headed eagle).
Vierge's style is absolutely masterly; his figures are detailed and real, full of life.
Notice also the perfect use of light and shadow, halftones and shading.
Notes 1 - Vierge's original drawings (Chinese ink and wash) were reproduced by photogravure (notice the plate mark); the specific technique used, heliogravure, allows an excellent reproduction both of the original wash halftones and of the lines.
