Commentary | Rocinante, frightened by a bojiganga brandishing three blown bladders, begins to kick, throwing don Quixote to the ground.
In the foreground (left), Sancho, running to help his master, and the cart with the players of Angulo el Malo's company; all disguised to perform Las Cortes de la Muerte (Devil, Death, Emperor and others). Vierge's style is absolutely masterly. Notice the perfect use of light and shadow, halftones and shading; remarkable pictorial effect. |
Notes | 1 - Vierge's original drawings (Chinese ink and wash) were reproduced by photogravure (notice the plate mark); the specific technique used, heliogravure, allows an excellent reproduction both of the original wash halftones and of the lines. |
