Commentary | Don Quixote, Sancho, the Duke and the Duchess witness the appearance of Merlin, on a cart accompanied by the enchanted Dulcinea, and listen to his prophecy about the way to disenchant her.
Accurate to Cervantes' text, Merlin appears as Death accompanied by figures in white robes and holding lighted tapers. Vierge's style is masterly; detailed and carefully-drawn figures. Perfect use of light and shadow, halftones and shading, creating an adecuate gloomy atmosphere. Usual in Vierge's illustrations, some element in black creates a worth noting contrast. His short and fine drawing lines imitate etching. |
Notes | 1 - Vierge's original drawings (Chinese ink and wash) were reproduced by photogravure (notice the plate mark); the specific technique used, heliogravure, allows an excellent reproduction both of the original wash halftones and of the lines. |
