Commentary Don Quixote and Sancho amazed by Countess Trifaldi's dueñas, all lifting their veils and showing the beards; the Duke and the Duchess observe them amused.
Vierge's style is masterly; detailed figures with good gestures and expressions; notice the contrast between the figures in the foreground, well-drawn, and the dueñas in the background, almost like ghosts.
Usual in Vierge's illustrations, some element in black creates a worth noting contrast.
His short and fine drawing lines imitate etching.
Notes 1 - Vierge's original drawings (Chinese ink and wash) were reproduced by photogravure (notice the plate mark); the specific technique used, heliogravure, allows an excellent reproduction both of the original wash halftones and of the lines.
