Commentary Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657).
Chodowiecki uses Savery's composition and renews it.
In the foreground, surrounding Grisóstomo's corpse, shepherds, don Quixote, Sancho, Ambrosio and Vivaldo; all looking to the background (Marcela's appearance).
Impression of depth by diagonal composition (from left bottom to right top) and shades.
Scene of great beauty and realism.
Notes 1 - Dated in 1779.
2 - Same plate first engraved for Leipzig: Caspar Fritsch, 1780-81.
3 - Wrongly-placed in chapter 24:1.
