Commentary Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657).
Chodowiecki uses almost the same composition, but with great realism.
In the foreground, the cart with the actors (Devil, Cupid, Angel, Death, Emperor, Soldier and Queen); on the right, the "bojiganga" with his three inflated bladders riding Sancho's stolen donkey.
In the background, Sancho helps don Quixote, fallen with Rocinante.
Drawing and engraving are excellent (see Cupid, Death, "bojiganga"...).
Notes 1 - Plate IX. Dated in 1779.
2 - Same plate first engraved for Leipzig: Caspar Fritsch, 1780-81.
3 - Wrongly-placed in chapter 18:2.
