Commentary | During the night at the inn, Maritornes (one-eyed; accurate to Cervantes' text) enters don Quixote's room looking for a muleteer (on the left); also Sancho sleeping in the room.
Don Quixote believes that Maritornes is the landlord's daughter and tries to embrace her. Illustration with very remarkable figures (the muleteer and Maritornes); don Quixote looks extremely young. |
Notes | 1 - Process reproduction of Pinelli's etching for Roma: R. Gentilucci, 1833-34.
2 - Wrongly-placed in chapter 35:1. 3 - Cushing Library owns a second copy of this 1833-34 illustration (same plate) with a different inscription: "Veglia l'Eroe, che a braccia aperte aspetta / Quella che tanto i suoi pensieri alletta. / Giunge l'Asturiana a passo lento, / E Don Chisicotte esprime il suo contento". |
