Commentary | Sancho and don Quixote returns to their village.
In the foreground, Sancho is welcome by his wife and daughter (realistic figures). Sancho's donkey carries the clothes of Altisidora's episode (the mitre should be a capirote with painted devils). In the background, don Quixote, the priest, the barber and the housekeeper. As an habitual anecdotal detail in Hayman's illustrations, there is one dog. Hayman chooses this episode as last illustration, not don Quixote's last will or death. Excellent drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - This episode was not represented in London: Tonson, 1738; Vanderbank chose "Don Quixote's last will" as last illustration. |
