Commentary | In the foreground, don Quixote is served by some Duchess' maidens; "salió a la gran sala, adonde halló a las doncellas puestas en ala tanto a una parte como a otra, y todas con aderezo de darle aguamanos" (31:2).
In the background, through a door, the Duke, the Duchess and the ecclesiastic waiting don Quixote for eating. One of the best illustrations of the whole edition; plate of remarkable quality; figures of great beauty; excellent drawing, engraving and shading. |
Notes | 1 - This illustration was not among the 32 scenes originally chosen by the Spanish Royal Academy.
2 - Two illustrations, "La aventura del rebuzno" and "Encuentro de don Quixote con los Duques" were considered too much comical for this edition, that pretended to be elegant, so they both were finally replaced by this. |
