Commentary | Portrait of Cervantes following Castillo's model (Madrid: Ibarra, 1780) with light changes.
In an ornamental frame with an oil lamp above and several symbols underneath in reference to Cervantes as a writer (book, quill, laurel branch...), a soldier (sword) and his imprisonment (chains, jar of water and bread...); same symbols used by Johannot (Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37). Drawing and engraving acceptable, but with little quality; cold and lacking expression. |
Notes | 1 - Same illustration first published in Barcelona: L. Obradors & P. Sulé, 1876. |
