Commentary | Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657); some novelty in the composition: in the foreground, don Quixote observing Sancho's blanketing (in the background). Smirke has represented the inn wall as a fence.
Masterly print because of drawing, engraving and details (figures in the background are perfect: see the innkeeper's wife, her daughter and Maritornes). The figure of Rocinante is powerful, with perfect drawing and excellent engraving, but not accurate to Cervantes' text. |
