Commentary Don Quixote, proud, raises Mambrino's helmet (a barber basin), while Sancho observes him smiling.
Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, after 1728).
Smirke has not included the traditional image of the barber fleeing away in the background.
Don Quixote and Sancho's figures are excellent, perfect portraits; masterly shading.
