Commentary | Smirke has chosen a calm instant, a dialog with don Quixote, Sancho and the goatherd, from Cardenio's story (usual in English editions since Tonson's). Perfect moment to represent detailed faces; don Quixote and goatherd's figures are remarkable, real portraits. Cardenio's escorzo has been badly resolved. |
