Commentary | Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724) and others; episode several times represented.
Restrained humor; neither doña Rodríguez nor don Quixote are extremely comical. Light and shadow effects are remarkable (from doña Rodríguez's candle); theatrical. In the background, a maiden, (Altisidora?), spies them from the door. |
Notes | 1 - See this same episode by Vanderbank (London: Tonson, 1738) and Hyman (London: Millar, 1755).
2 – Newly-engraved by J. Phillibrown for London: Charles Daly, c. 1830. |
