Illustrations: The complete edition with two frontispieces (one repeated in each tome) designed by Craig and engraved by Mackenzie. Contains a portrait of Cervantes engraved by B. Lane after José del Castillo's design (Madrid: Ibarra, 1780); 17 illustrations engraved by B. Lane (12), Mackenzie (1), Burke (3) and H. R. Cooke (1) after designs by Charles-Antoine Coypel (seven from La Haye: Hondt, 1746), John Vanderbank (five from London: Tonson, 1738), Pierre-Charles Trémolières (one from La Haye: Hondt, 1746), Antonio Carnicero (one from Madrid: Ibarra, 1780), José del Castillo (one from Madrid: Ibarra, 1780) and Daniel-Nicolas Chodowiecki (two from Leipzig: Caspar Fritsch, 1780-81). It also has a map of Spain and Portugal unsigned.
Cushing's copy lacks the portrait and an the illustration ("SANCHO'S AMOUR" by Chodowiecki and Lane).
Those two illustrations by Chodowiecki are about Avellaneda's Continuation, but they have been placed illustrating Cervantes' text.
Ashbee only refers to one portrait and two allegorical titlepages, 16 engravings and a map.

Illustrations: Has 24 hand-colored aquatint illustrations after John Heaviside Clark's drawings.
"They are well conceived and executed. The series, which was engraved for colouring, and is generally, but not always, found coloured, is now difficult to procure" (Ashbee).
Río y Rico, excessively critic, considers these illustrations as very bad.
For Givanel, they are revolutionary, a new and humorous way of understanding Cervantes' novel.
In Cushing's copy, the distribution of illustrations by volume (I, 7; II, 5; III, 6; IV, 6) is different to that given by Rico (I, 8; II, 7; III, 5; IV, 4).
Cushing Library also has a set of 20 plates of these illustrations (four missing). Five of these illustrations also appeared in Edinburgh: Hurst, Robinson & Co., 1822. |
