"Although these engravings rank among the finest produced in Spain, their composition is not always happy, nor their drawing invariably correct. The figures are too lanky, and they lack movement. The costume, however, is fairly correct" (Ashbee).
Rio Rico refers to a portrait + 34 illustrations; he does not mention the headpiece.
"Nada tienen de extraordinario, pues se limitan a continuar la tradición académica indígena" (Givanel 161-164).
It has the same plates first used for Madrid: Sancha, 1797-98 (another headpiece by Paret/Tejada and three maps of this same edition have not been re-printed). It includes a "Pauta y esplicación de las estampas" (missing for vol. IV). |
