Illustrations: This is a set of six plates, originaly designed and engraved by William Hogarth for Tonson´s 1738 edition, with descriptions in English later added under Dodsley's direction, and now restored by James Heath. Reprinted in London: Baldwin and Cradock [1835-37]. |
Description: Hogarth's rejected illustrations for the Lord Carteret edition (Londres: J. y R. Tonson, 1738). The original plates were bought by J. Dodsley after Tonson´s death, later by Messrs. Boydell, and after them by Sayer. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies with either a recut plate or the 'engravers version.'
Ashbee cites only a 1835 edition. |
